John Maynard (Text: Fontane Musik: Arndt/Reufer)
Over the lake the 'Swallow' should flow
The way from Detroit to Buffalo
In the dusk the passengers all
Already can see the dim landfall
They ask John Maynard 'How far is it still '
He looks ahead then looks around
-Still 30 minutes... a half hour more-
-Still 30 minutes... a half hour more-
-He died for us ? our love ? his meed ? John Maynard- ( 4x )
Every heart is glad and free
A sudden cry from the hold ? Fire! one shouts
Smoke then fire and flames ablaze (aglow)
The crowd pressed together on the bow
On the bow there's still air and light
A moaning araises 'Where are we, where'
-And still 15 minutes to Buffalo-
-And still 15 minutes to Buffalo-
The wind grows stronger but the smoke cloud stays
The captain can't see his helmsman no more
Through the bullhorn the captain asks John
'Still there?'The answer 'Yes, sir, I am'
'Onto the shore! Into the surf!'
Cheered by the crowd he holds onto
-And still 10 minutes to Buffalo-
-And still 10 minutes to Buffalo!!-
-He died for us ? our love ? his meed ? John Maynard- ( 4x )
'Still there John Maynard?' - the answer is clear (comes)
With dying voice 'Yes, sir, I keep on'
And in the surf, the reefs, the rocks,
Into their midst he slams the boat
If there's rescue- the only way to go
Salvation- the shores of Buffalo
-All are saved ? but one is missing!-
-All are saved ? but one is missing!-
-He died for us ? our love ? his meed ? John Maynard- ( 4x )
Ten thousands follow when the church bells ring
With flowers they fill the grave with him
And with golden letters in the marble stone
The city has it's tribute shown
In spite of fire he hold on tight
Saved our lives ? bears the crown
-He died for us ? our love ? his meed ? John Maynard-
