Ruthless Songtext

I used to think life was simple
I used to think I really cared
I used to think love was heavenly
But my thoughts were so impaired
Though softly bled the colour, from the broken marble sky
And life knows no more sadness than when your vision dies
So suddenly and ruthlessly I came
To feel life hardly more than a game

I used to think life was scared
I used to think sex was good
I used to think my sheets were clean
Till you stained them with your virgin's blood
Slowly I grew distant from this cold and empty world
Drifting over oceans though my sails remained unfurled
So easily and ruthlessly I found
My battered soul no longer made a sound

I used to think life had purpose
I used to think I could pretend
I used to think I'd find the answer
But death is your only friend
Quickly bled the fervour from my dark and searching eyes
I learnt to bow my lids before the things that I despised
So sweetly and ruthlessly I learned
To live a life I once would have spurned
So suddenly and ruthlessly I came
To live with neither hope nor shame

Cut me down, my skin is burnt, I know that I was wrong
Wriggling like a maggot trying to find a place I could belong
My lips are dry, the air is thin and dust invades my lungs
I've been trying to reach the stars tonight, but my ladder has no rungs
And broken bits of misery are rattling in my soul
I've been too long beneath the sun and now I'm growing old
I need a new horizon and a new change of clothes
And I need you I suppose
