Happy that way
This is my street as it stretches
From the pharmacy to the grocery store
And back
And these are those pretty blue houses
Where the women carry babies in their bellies
Not born yet
Who I would ask
If they really wanna come here
Where you earn good money with bad lies
And where every little decision
Has to to be part of a bigger compromise
So what would they say? I bet they're happy that way
The welcoming sign to earth
Is blue and blinding
Like the hospital ceiling light.
And you'll slip into this system
Of doctors and presidents
And you'll ask yourself how they can sleep at night
Do they strip off their bad conscience
Before they go to bed
Or have they stripped off their conscience
Right after the first citizen dead
But if you asked them what would they say
I bet they're happy that way
They'll bring you down a hundred times
You're not safe from that
Authority and bureaucracy
Will make you sad and depressed
And eventually they will keep you
From speaking out loud
And make you believe what they're doing
Is what you should be proud of
And you'll browse through holiday brochures
And women's magazines
Who'll teach with those ugly legs
You better stay in
And with every lollipop you buy
You're part of a commercial system
And support those horrible factories
You hope you'll never have never to work in
I find it hard myself and I hope you're stronger than me
Maybe you jump up and shout: that's not the right way to be
And what I hope is when I ask you then
What you would say is
I'm not happy this way
No I'm not happy this way.
