Didn't realize,
What was happening,
As one by one,
We left.

The sun beat down,
To dry the tears in your eyes,
We said goodbye.

And then we started to,
Count down the afternoons,
We're leaving soon.

Staring out to the Northern sky,
The direction of my home.

And now the shadows were looming larger,
We felt the august steaming colder.
More than the summer,
Was coming to an end.

Sitting in silence next to you,
The preacher said "talk and start anew",
Our faces staring at our feet,
Walking warm in the concrete,
We made sense of what is to be,

And now the shadows are falling over,
We felt september turn to winter.

I drove to Santa Barbara.
